The Birmingham and Midlands region enjoys one of the most dynamic legal markets in the UK and has experienced considerable growth in recent years.

At the heart of the region, the renaissance of Birmingham brought about by one of the largest urban redevelopments in Europe has attracted a large number of major commercial firms to compete with the established national and regional firms in the city. At the upper end of the market Birmingham has developed a reputation as the leading alternative to London for UK and international businesses with the larger firms acting for a significant number of FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 businesses and central government departments. The move of these firms towards handling national/international work has created many opportunities for smaller firms to undertake more of the quality regional commercial work previously handled by their larger rivals.

Outside Birmingham, the West Midlands region contains a number of quality commercial and private client law firms with each county boasting its own beacon firms. The East Midlands, for some time in the shadow of their larger neighbour has in recent years re-established itself as a serious player, with major commercial firms based in Nottingham, Leicester, Derby and Northampton acting for a national (and increasingly international) client base.

Traditionally dominated by the manufacturing sector, the region's in-house legal market has diversified considerably over the last decade. Growth has been particularly evident in the financial services, FMCG, retail, transport & logistics and technology sectors with a number of businesses employing substantial legal teams.

Midlands salary levels are competitive when compared with the other regions of the UK. A number of the newer entrants into the market are willing to pay a substantial premium over their established rivals as the competition for talent intensifies.
