Northshoring

Northshoring: before you make the move

Why businesses are Northshoring

Regardless of recent developments, London is – and will remain – at the heart of the legal and finance sectors. However, ever-increasing labour and office costs in the capital combined with the desire to achieve efficiencies and improve results, is making moving to the regions a more attractive option for UK law firms and companies. It’s certainly a more attractive and practical option than taking a business off-shore, which is likely to become even more complicated and less beneficial to a business, and the UK economy as a whole, as we go forward.

A perspective:

  • Relocating business – all or part – from London out to the regions
  • Proving attractive to the legal and financial service sectors
  • Less disruptive to business than off-shoring

Proven to work for legal businesses

Momentum is gathering for legal businesses to move out of London – in part if not wholly.

A CBRE report found that 39% of law firms are pursuing a move to the North in order to cut costs.

In 2011, for example, Allen & Overy and Herbert Smith Freehills were two of the first international firms to ‘Northshore’ by establishing legal support centres in Belfast.

Since then, a number of other firms have followed suit, including Ashurst, who now have an office in Glasgow; Baker & McKenzie with a service hub in Belfast; and Berwin Leighton Paisner, Freshfield Bruckhaus Deringer and Latham and Watkins who now all have offices in Manchester.

Moves that for many businesses started with the provision of support services to their London offices and have evolved in a variety of ways.

We also have a valuable understanding and experience of all aspects of working and living in the regions and can assist with:

  • Advising on where might be a good location for your business
  • Appraising you on the business environment in towns and cities in the regions, particularly the legal sector
  • Finding offices that meet your specific requirements

And having a London office allows us to offer you a face-to-face consultation service, which can help make the move not only more personal, but also more efficient

Firms that have made the Northshore move:

  • Allen & Overy
  • Herbert Smith Freehills
  • Ashurst
  • Baker & McKenzie
  • Berwin Leighton Paisner
  • Freshfield Bruckhaus Deringer

Reasons to Northshore

It’s not just the legal profession that is being attracted to Northshoring to reduce costs and access a rich and skilled pool of talented people in the regions.

Other ‘names’ who have presences on the Northshore include:

  • The BBC in Salford Quays
  • ITV, who moved several of their big shows to their studios in Media City, Salford
  • RBS now has offices in Manchester and in other key regional locations
  • HSBC has announced that Birmingham will be the new location for it head offices

The financial benefits of making the move can be considerable.

For example:

An estimated property cost saving per employee of moving or expanding from central London to Manchester could be as high as £10,000 per person, per annum

The same estimated figure also applies to staff costs

The Enterprise Zone scheme and Northern Powerhouse initiative, with their tax breaks and Government support, add to the attraction of Northshoring

In a survey by Cushman & Wakefield, Leeds came out as the top city for in Europe and the UK for value for money office space

On both a commercial and personal level, property outside of London is more affordable and more readily available – five of the top 10 happiest cities to live in are significantly north of London
