Chester
“A glorious ancient city with a rare elegance – beautifully preserved, yet surprisingly young and lively.”
Chester is one of the jewels in Britain’s crown. The county town of Cheshire, surrounded by rich agricultural land on the banks of the River Dee, it’s one of the oldest and most complete walled cities. In 1779 Samuel Johnson wrote “Chester pleases my fancy more than any town I ever saw” – and many feel the same today. It’s a city full of history, stunning architecture, excellent restaurants and a vibrant atmosphere.
The city’s heritage comes from almost every period, notably the Romans who settled here in 79AD and named it Deva. Parts of the original Roman walls remain as an elevated walkway around the city. Chester’s Roman amphitheatre is thought to have been the largest in Britain, and the Deva Roman Experience brings a flavour of that period to life every day.
Much of Chester’s land is owned by the Duke of Westminster, whose estate is at Eaton just outside the city – various city features carry his family name of Grosvenor. Many of the Victorian buildings not in the half-timbered style were designed by John Douglas, the Duke’s principal architect at the time, complete with his trademark twisted chimneys.
Retail in detail
One of the city’s main attractions is its shopping in the famous ‘rows’, two levels of shops dating from medieval times. There are many chain stores both in the centre and on retail parks to the west, two indoor shopping malls and the famous Browns of Chester department store, once known as ‘the Harrods of the North’.
Culture vultures
Chester Zoo, second largest in the country, is another major visitor attraction. Its range of animals and habitats is astonishing, and it’s rated as one of the best in Europe.
The city also has two cinemas and the Gateway Theatre, and over the summer hosts an annual music festival, the Midsummer Watch Parade and a series of Mystery Plays dating from medieval times. There’s also a lively bar and club scene.
There’s a popular local football team too, the Chester Jets national basketball team and several meetings throughout the year at Chester’s delightful racecourse, the Roodee – the oldest in England.
