How does IT fit into a law firm?
IT has become such an important element in law firms that it’s now commonplace for both large and small organisations to have a dedicated IT presence on-site to handle their infrastructure. The career opportunities range from specialist manual jobs such as installing networking cables to desk jobs such as application programming.
What IT roles are available in law firms, and what qualifications do I need?
It all depends on the size of the firm and its needs. In a small practice one person may cover many aspects of IT with the more technical aspects being outsourced. In a large firm, different departments will manage all requirements internally. The most common rolesand relevant qualifications and experience are detailed below.
- Web Developer most firms will want evidence of experience and qualifications –most people will have a foundation degree in a design-related subject
- Software Developer you should have a degree or BTEC HNC/HND in IT, Computer Science or Software
- Network Engineer while many have gained experience by completing apprenticeships after GSCEs, network engineers can also complete a BTEC HNC/HND in relevant subjects
- Systems Analyst entry requirement is usually a degree or BTEC HNC/HND although courses which focus on business along with the technical elements are also recommended
- Network Managers will need a number of years’ experience working as a network engineer or similar IT support role before progressing to management
- Database Administrator there’s no single defined route to database administrator with the necessary knowledge and skills usually gained in IT support, systems or a programming role
- Support Technician trainees need a good working knowledge of computer systems and can study for ‘on the job’ vocational awards
