Which type of law firm?
It’s important you know the differences between law firms. That way you can decide which would suit you best. Essentially, there are four main types of law firm.
General practice involves small or medium-sized firms, usually with less than 20 partners, working in the local community. They deal with drafting wills, investigating compensation claims for injury victims, property buying and selling, representing workers at employment tribunals and family law matters.
Commercial law firms, especially in London, specialise in advising large corporates on multi-million pound deals or disputes. Because of their size, wide-ranging experience and highly qualified staff, they cover numerous areas of law including banking, commercial, corporate finance, IP and large scale commercial litigation. They also tend to have other offices in major financial and commercial centres throughout the UK and abroad.
Niche practices specialise in one particular area of law. For example, it could be sports law representing footballers or clubs, or media law representing celebrities in contractual and sponsorship negotiations. Other niche areas include construction and PFI or family law.
Legal Aid firms specialise in cases involving clients who otherwise couldn’t afford solicitors’ fees. Much of their time is spent advising on divorce and child care law, crime and fraud, housing and immigration.
