Liverpool

The Liverpool of today is a changed city. Now one of the UK's leading centres for culture, entertainment and sport, it was European Capital of Culture in 2008.

Its architecture is world-class, with 1,500 listed buildings – more than any city outside London. Its waterfront is also a World Heritage Site, on a par with the Taj Mahal and the Pyramids at Giza. The city’s famous cathedrals sit at either end of Hope Street, while its National Museums include the World Museum, Walker Art Gallery and the Merseyside Maritime Museum at the Albert Dock, alongside Tate Liverpool and the Beatles Story. As for theatre, choose from the Everyman, Playhouse, Unity and Empire with a range of contemporary, classic and touring productions.

Sport and leisure

Renowned for its sporting prowess, Liverpool has the Grand National at Aintree, two Premier League football clubs and more golf on Merseyside than any other county – including three Open Championship courses. Being on the coast, it’s also ideal for water sports enthusiasts.

Getting away from the city’s hustle and bustle is as simple as a visit to one of its many parks, the stately homes of Speke or Croxteth, or a trip along the coast to the nature reserves at Formby, the sandy beaches on the Wirral or the beautiful North Wales countryside.

Restaurants and retail

With new venues opening all the time, Liverpool’s restaurant and bar scene has really come alive. You’ll find everything from traditional British cooking to Argentinean, Afro-Caribbean and Chilean cuisine…and of course, local delicacies such as Scouse.

Shopping-wise the city’s got what it takes too, especially with the award-winning Liverpool ONE development right at its heart boasting over 160 stores including many big names.

Living in Liverpool

Liverpool is a surprisingly affordable city. In the centre you’ll find many conversions and new build properties. The suburbs of Woolton and Allerton are home to many professionals, while to the north are Crosby and Formby – both desirable towns by the sea. South, and across the Mersey is the Wirral, with an eclectic range of places to live from the seaside towns of West Kirby and Hoylake to rural hamlets such as Burton. Commuting from here means using the Mersey Tunnels, the Merseyrail network or the famous ferry.
