Newcastle

“A vibrant, friendly city with a long heritage and surrounded by the scenic beauty of Northumbria – ideally placed for the coastline, with its unspoilt sandy beaches and dunes.”

Newcastle is truly unique. Few places in Britain have such an amazing array of galleries and museums, sports and leisure facilities, restaurants and shops. While nowhere else has such breathtaking countryside just 20 minutes from the city centre.

Over the last decade nearly £2 billion of regeneration investment has given Newcastle its trendy quayside, internationally recognised business centres and vibrant cultural scene. With the perfect work life balance from city standard career opportunities and country living, it’s no wonder so many international companies are based in the region.

 Retail in detail

Newcastle is one of the UK’s best shopping destinations, from stylish independent boutiques to major high street stores to colourful markets. Eldon Square is the city’s main area, with M&S and John Lewis, while Princess Square has the chic fashion designers.

 Cultural concentration

With six theatres – including the Theatre Royal, third home to the Royal Shakespeare company – and 20 galleries and museums, the city has one of the highest concentrations outside the capital. Art can be found at 36 Lime Street, the largest studio in the north east with regular open weekends, and the Laing Art Gallery with its impressive collection from pre-Raphaelites to Henry Moore.

The Norman Foster-designed Sage Gateshead on Gateshead Quay is home to the Northern Sinfonia, while the Newcastle Metro Radio Arena hosts many music and other events.
 Sporting life

The region is noted for its sports, particularly Newcastle United FC and the Newcastle Falcons in Rugby Union. Gateshead Thunder is the local rugby League side, while there’s international cricket at Durham’s ground in Chester-le-Street. The Newcastle Eagles basketball team has also enjoyed great success in recent years. The city is home to the world’s biggest half marathon too, the Great North Run in September.
 Get away from it all

With the Northumberland and North Yorkshire Moors National Parks on its doorstep – not to mention some of the most pristine coastline in the UK – Newcastle is an ideal base for lovers of the great outdoors. The Lake District is also just a couple of hours away, as are Edinburgh to the north and Leeds and York to the south. Further afield, London is just three hours and twenty minutes away by train, while the city’s airport now connects with all major European destinations and beyond.
