Nottingham
“It may be steeped in history, but also has a lively contemporary scene. A city now well and truly on the map.”
Nottingham is notable for so many things. It was home to outlaw Robin Hood, poet Lord Byron, manager Brian Clough and designer Paul Smith, for example. Not to mention the Bramley apple, HP Sauce, Ibuprofen, the Raleigh Chopper, shin guards and MRI scanning, all of which originated in Nottinghamshire.
Nowadays it’s a thriving city of 750,000 people, boats one of the highest rates of job creation in the country and is home to several major UK employers including Boots, Experian, Capital One and the Inland Revenue. It’s a region that sees itself as genuine, independent and ambitious, as reflected by the recent redevelopment of its town centre to attract a higher calibre workforce and student population, as well as leisure visitors.
Fashion, fine art and food
Nottingham’s standing in the fashion world is on a par with London’s West End, with Paul Smith’s original store in Byard Lane, two large shopping centres, five major department stores, stylish arcades such as Flying Horse Walk and a host of independent outlets.
One of the city’s major artistic landmarks is Anish Kapoor’s Sky Mirror, and Nottingham has over 400 practising artists with galleries at Castle Museum, Angel Row and the new Nottingham Contemporary plus regular arts festivals. Theatre-goers are well-served too, with the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall hosting popular shows, comedy, ballet and opera, the Nottingham Playhouse new drama and the independent Lace Market Theatre amateur productions. There are also summer outdoor productions in the grounds of Nottingham Castle and Newstead Abbey.
The city centre Cornerhouse complex houses a 14-screen cinema, while independent and world cinema can be found at Broadway Media Centre. Nottingham is also a major centre for live music, venues including the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham Arena, Rock City and The Bomb.
From fine dinging to vegetarian fast food, and the oldest pub in Britain to fashionable bars, Nottingham’s nightlife has something for everyone too – in fact, legend has it there’s a different pub, club bar or restaurant for every night of the year.
Sport and scenery
The city’s sporting heritage includes the world’ oldest football league club (Notts County), former European Cup winners Notts Forest and the world’s third oldest cricket ground at Trent Bridge (also one of the most attractive grounds in the country). With such a central location, the city’s also become home to several national venues, such as the National Ice Centre and National Water Sports Centre.
Getting away from the city, the Peak District National Park and historic Newstead Abbey, Southwell Minster and Wollaton Hall all offer peace and respite…or simply enjoy live music and a cool beer in Arboretum Park. Other outdoor attractions include the award-winning Attenborough Nature Reserve, Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest and the historic annual Goose Fair.
City living
House prices in this part of the world are well below the national average, and the best areas are West Bridgeford, Grampton and Gedling. The city centre also has vibrant new developments popular with young professionals in areas such as the Lace Market.
In terms of education there’s a full range of public sector and independent schools, colleges and two of the UK’s most popular Universities – notable independent schools include Nottingham High School, Trent College and Grosvenor School.
