BCL Legal’s 2013 Annual In-house Survey Highlights Salary & Bonus Differences Across UK

BCL Legal – one of the UK’s legal recruitment consultancies which operates from its network of offices in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Birmingham, Bristol and Reading – has this week launched its annual salary survey of in-house lawyers working across the regions. The survey analysed salaries, bonuses and general benefits. One of the key findings was that average salaries varied hugely between the Home Counties, the North West, the Midlands & the Yorkshire areas.

The average salaries for in-house lawyers with one to five years’ PQE varied between £40,500 and £76,000 depending on location. Individual regions were as follows: Home Counties South (encompassing Sussex, Kent, Surrey & Berkshire) – £48,000 to £76,000, the North West – £43,500 to £67,500, the Home Counties North (encompassing Essex, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire & Oxfordshire) – £42,000 to £60,000, the Midlands – £42,000 to £58,000 and Yorkshire – £40,500 to £55,000.

In-house professionals with between six and ten years’ PQE enjoyed an average of between £56,500 and £129,000 per annum. The Home Counties South was the highest paid region with the top salary of £129,000.

During the same survey, 78% of in-house lawyers in the Home Counties North stated that they received a bonus in 2012 with the average being £18,000. Whilst in the Home Counties South it was 96% and £17,745, in the North West it was 82% and £17,500, in the Midlands it was 77% and £18,000 and in Yorkshire the numbers were 62% and £17,250.

Mark Levine, director of BCL Legal and head of its in-house department, said: “Our annual salary survey is a great indicator of how the in-house market is right now. The differences across the regions bear witness to the key business hubs in each location but it’s generally a positive report with pretty buoyant salaries and bonuses despite the current economic challenges.

Mark added: Many companies are now realising the benefits of employing an in-house lawyer and our prediction is that this trend will only become stronger over the coming years as organisations continue to look for cost effective legal counsel who can add real value and aid growth.”
