BCL Legal Helps Leeds Lawyers & Manchester Law Students Get Career Focused with Two Events this Month…

The BCL Legal team staged one high profile event and took part in another this month, all in aid of helping lawyers and law students to progress their careers in law; the first was in Leeds and was held in conjunction with the Leeds Junior Lawyers Division and the other was Manchester Law School’s “Careers Wednesday”.

On 13th March, Tom Fleet from BCL Legal’s in-house division and Angharad Jones from the private practice department headed to Leeds for a bespoke careers event staged at The Living Room. The theme of the evening – which was aimed at trainee solicitors approaching qualification and those with up to five years’ PQE – focused on the current market and included keynote speakers Jason Curtis, who is head of legal & company secretary at Mamas & Papas, and Morag Joyce – real estate partner from DAC Beachcroft. The talk included a partner’s view on a CV when it lands on their desk, what makes a candidate stand out as well as tips on how to progress your career in the law. The presentation was followed by an opportunity to ask questions over complimentary drinks and feedback from attendees was very positive.

Angharad commented; “As a business we always want add value and one effective way of doing that is staging events that can help lawyers to stand out from the crowd. The turn out in Leeds was fantastic and our speakers gave practical tips as well as valuable knowledge and insight. The evening was a real success and more similar events will be announced over the coming months.”

The Manchester careers & employability event was held on 20th March and attracted over 30 Law students who wanted to hear about the paralegal & training contracts job market from a recruitment perspective.

The session was led by Ify Okpalugo – a manager at BCL Legal – and she discussed what students can be doing to differentiate themselves in a tough job market, the typical roles and work that might be available to them at entry level as well as an overall view of the current jobs market at graduate level and beyond. Ify also showcased the services of BCL Legal and BCL Graduates – the firm’s dedicated division that aims to help talented graduates get their first step on the legal career ladder.

Other contributors included representatives from Roberts Jackson, Linder Myers, Weightmans and Peninsula.

Ify said; “We were delighted to be selected as the only receruitment consultants to partner with MMU for this event.Young and ambitious talent is the future of the legal profession so it was a pleasure to take part in the event. There was a real buzz in the room and I was delighted to see so many students wanting to find out more about BCL Graduates.”
