Coventry Building Society is a financial services success story being strong, secure, trusted and growing. It is the third largest building society in the UK with assets of over £26.9 billion and in March announced a record financial performance for the year ending 2012. With a reputation for excellent customer service, cost-efficiency and product innovation the award-winning Society has remained successful because of its unremitting attention to detail and serving members interests.
The legal team currently consists of a General Counsel and Company Secretary, a Senior Legal Counsel, a Commercial Property Solicitor, a Treasury Solicitor, a Trainee Solicitor and a Paralegal. The legal team is expanding and the following opportunities have arisen for 3 Solicitors and 4 Paralegals.
You will support the Senior Counsel and General Counsel in providing legal leadership in the Society, with a specialist focus on retail banking and the savings product portfolio. Specifically you will:
- Provide experienced and authoritative financial promotions expertise for the launch of new products and for proactive on-going review and guidance on the existing product portfolio.
- Use extensive experience in the sector to manage and mitigate legal risk.
- Deputise for Senior Counsel/General Counsel in Society Committees, representing the Society in national industry forums (CML and BSA in particular).
- Thoroughly prepare the Society to satisfy the requirements of legal change for financial products.
- Identifying structural reform needs and drive change, including persuading and influencing at a high level.
To be successful, you will be a qualified Solicitor or a Barrister with experience of dealing with financial services products either in-house in in private practice. This is an excellent opportunity to join and operate at a senior level within the Society.
You will support the General Counsel and Senior Legal Counsel in establishing a Centre of Excellence for Data Protection in Coventry Building Society by providing timely, consistent, accurate and clear advice to the Society on DP issues and ensuring that the Society preserves the data and privacy rights of its customers and others.
This is a newly created role and you will be responsible for setting up, leading and training a new team to manage all subject access requests, developing and implementing procedures to ensure compliance with DP law and regulation.
In addition, you will be responsible for developing and leading training and awareness across the Society and implementing appropriate management information processes to report on compliance. You will also ensure continuous compliance and good practice in the Society’s management of data protection issues in the context of continuing legal and regulatory developments.
For this position, we are interested in hearing from indiviuduals who are either legally qualified as a Solicitor/Barrister or alternatively have a professional qualification or accreditation in data protection with a minimum of 4 years post qualification experience. Prior in-house experience of practical implementation of Data Protection is a distinct advantage.
We are looking to recruit an experienced commercial lawyer to join the Society on a 12 month basis with the potential of a permanent position becoming available. You will work closely with the General Counsel, Senior Solicitor and wider business in providing contract law advice and drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial contracts. This role will be particularly focused on procurement issues/contracts, however, you will cover the full range of contracts which support the business. You will also work closely with the IT operations of the business and advise on IT contracts.
We are keen to hear from individuals with a high level of expertise and seniority, with the ability to work without any day to day supervision, and to provide specialist senior guidance on these matters to the management team in the Society. In addition you will have the ability to persuade and influence at a high level, and to manage workload with competing priorities. Although a 12 month position is being offered initially, there is a strong possibility that a longer term or permanent position will be on offer.
Data Protection Paralegals
You will support the Data Protection Lawyer/Specialist as part of the Coventry Building Society Centre of Excellence for Data Protection. You will be responsible for the processing of subject access requests submitted to Coventry Building Society in compliance with statutory requirements and time-scales as set out in the Data Protection Act 1998, the Information Commissioner’s Codes of Practice and other guidance, applicable confidentiality obligations and in line with internal policies and values. You will also manage your own portfolio of files in accordance with established procedures and assist the Data Protection Lawyer/Specialist with more general Data Protection issues as required.
To be successful you will have a Law degree (or non law degree plus law conversion course). A completed Legal Practice Course or equivalent is not essential but would be an advantage
