BCL Legal sees rise in demand for NQ lawyers in the West Midlands

BCL Legal – the Birmingham based legal recruitment consultancy which operates across the Midlands – has seen an unexpected single percentage figure rise in the demand for newly qualified lawyers from law firms within the region. The trend will be welcome news for hundreds of law graduates who will be coming into the market this September.

Non-contentious areas of the law have proved most buoyant with banking and corporate leading the way along with insurance litigation. The majority of roles are, not surprisingly, at the larger top 100 firms.

James Brewster, associate director within BCL Legal’s West Midlands Private Practice Department, commented; ‘The demand for NQs is stronger than we thought but that doesn’t mean that a September qualifier can expect to find the job of their dreams on their doorstep! In order to secure a role this summer, NQs will have to be as flexible as possible in terms of location, salary and the area of law in which they practice.

James continued; ‘A few years ago it was enough to have a first or second choice but now NQs need to be willing to consider specialising in any of the areas in which they have completed a seat and be willing to relocate if necessary. Salary wise, NQs have to be prepared to accept around £30,000 – especially for defendant PI positions. The NQ market is still not amazing but there are opportunities out there, you just have to look very hard and see the long terms benefits.
