James Batt, Director at BCL Legal, comments on Halliwells’ administration

Over the past few years, Halliwells has become one of the driving forces within the legal sector outside London. The recent news of it going into administration has been a body blow for the industry; especially in the regions where it has enjoyed strong growth and a robust presence. The reasons why things have gone wrong are now being hotly debated in offices and in pubs across the UK and the details will, no doubt, be analysed and scrutinised for many years to come.

At the time of writing there is still no news as to what the details of any kind of deal is going to be but we know the firm boasts some hugely talented lawyers and their futures should be of paramount importance. Mergers and acquisitions often mean casualties and from someone who works in the recruitment sector, I hope that decisions are made and communicated quickly. The various Halliwells offices have a pool of well qualified, experienced and switched on legal experts who will, I’m sure, have bright futures whatever happens.

As a firm, there’s no doubting that Halliwells divided opinion but the loss of any national law practice is not good for the regional legal landscape and the fallout from this demise will be around for a while.
