If at first you don’t succeed, try try again!
Sometimes no matter how hard we work, no matter how hard we try, things just don’t go right do they? They say bad luck comes in threes – does it? Or are we just focussing on the negative things in life and not actually going anywhere? How pessimistic!
In a tricky market, and an even trickier economic climate, the doom and gloom can sometimes get the better of us. I am speaking to a lot of lawyers at the moment who are wondering if now is the best time to make a move? The answer is yes! Giving it more thought, I actually think that these tougher times are exactly the prompt we need to refocus, brush ourselves down, and start again in a more positive light – and that could mean thinking about a new job.
It is important to remember that merely having a look at what the market is doing, or seeing what jobs are out there, is by no means flagging up to your employer that you are thinking of leaving. It could just be that refreshing opportunity you are looking for that will add a positive spin on what may feel like a bit of a stagnant blip in your career.
I think its also crucial to note, that when work isn’t going all that great, the first opportunity that comes up can look especially attractive. It is very easy to put all our eggs in one basket, and when that golden opportunity doesn’t work out, our confidence can be knocked. But a little bit of PMA works wonders. If at first you don’t succeed, try try again. By speaking to a consultant, who has the best possible knowledge of the legal market in your chosen discipline, they will know which are the best firms or organisations to approach, what interview techniques work best for different employers, and hopefully give you a broader view of the market than you initially thought of yourself.
If things are tough, take a step back, refocus your goals and ambitions, and start again. It has certainly worked for me, with (touch wood) a very successful year placing candidates across Yorkshire this year to date. If you are a reading this as a potential candidate, that could mean a new job (in which case BCL Legal are certainly here to help!), or if you are reading this as a potential client, that could mean a new recruit (in which case we can help with that too!).
If its a bit of advice you need, or an update on the legal market, give BCL Legal a call and we will be happy to help.
