I’ve had mine, have you had yours?

It is that time of year again here at BCL Legal where our 6 month reviews are taking place. Appraisals are no ones idea of fun but most, if not every organization evaluates the performance of its employees in some way, whether that process is formal or informal, or on a regular or an ad-hoc basis.

Chantel Gallagher, Consultant with BCL Legal in Birmingham offers her opinion on appraisals in the work place.

Appraisals allow a manager to identify motivators as well as underlying factors that may be affecting employee performance which could be something as simple as a training issue rather than a lack of talent. Here at BCL Legal consultants specialise in specific legal disciplines across a demographic so it puts us in a very strong position to have the best market knowledge possible. We have a review every six months which I personally find to be very beneficial. It gives us all the chance to review our work/achievements over the last six months and to put a business plan together for what we want to achieve in the coming six months. By having a review it gives you a clear focus on what you want to achieve.

I personally feel that appraisals are beneficial as it highlights training needs you may require and it gives your manager the opportunity to evaluate your performance, whether this is positive or negative. Any feedback is better than no feedback however without appraisals or any kind of performance management how do you know if you are doing your job to the best of your ability? It’s also an opportunity for you to consider whether you actually want to remain in the same role for another six /twelve months.
