Questions to stay away from at interview

Interviews are all about answering questions ‘appropriately’ and asking ‘appropriate’ questions.

So what are the inappropriate questions to avoid!

What does your company do?
By simply putting a companies name in to the internet you will most probably receive more information than you would have time to read! Asking this question is just pure lazy and shows that you have not put any preparation into the meeting.
What you should do instead is find something of interest and relevance and ask about that – this will show you have done your homework, are interested in the company and will hopefully lead to an interesting discussion.

Will I be able to move to another part of the business/ qualify into another area of expertise?
This question shouts out “I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THIS ROLE BUT LOOKING FOR IT TO HELP ME MOVE UPWARDS/ IN ANOTHER DIRECTION”
This might very well be the case but do your time in the role you are applying for and it might then be possible to make the next step up. By asking this question you are likely to be shown the door immediately..
Far better to ask about general development opportunities within the company and training. Asking why this role has arisen might help you find out what the previous job holder has moved on to do.

What are the office hours, holiday entitlement, sick pay?
Although all worth knowing and of more importance/ relevance to some more than others there is a time and a place to ask these questions. By asking them at interview you are potentially showing that you focus on these elements of a job more than other, let’s say, more important aspects.
My advice.. stay away from these questions for now..

Negative questions: What is the worst part of working in this company? Why do people leave? Do you do background checks? I heard a rumour…
This last section really is self explanatory but you’d be surprised how many times they do come up in interview.
I would always suggest writing down a list of positive, informed questions to ask if a) they are not answered throughout the interview or B) if you are asked if you have any questions.
