Newly Qualified – Panic Stations?

Newly Qualified – Panic Stations?

We are a mere 2 weeks away from qualification date and it remains that not all trainees have yet to secure a newly qualified solicitor job.

There has undoubtedly been a last minute flurry of activity but for those yet to secure a role the question as to what to do will inevitably arise.

Is it time to Panic and consider alternative routes or does hope still remain? The answer is that there remains hope and as difficult as it may seem, some patience is require. From experience, we have continued to make NQ appointments post-September deadlines, often as firms have realised that they do actually have a business case to support a junior fee earner.

That is not to say that one should simply sit back and wait for opportunities to arise. It is quite proper to start to consider alternatives and means by which you can continue to gain continuity of legal experience (whatever that may be). This can include exploring the paralegal job market. Certainly there has been a proliferation of appointments within larger law firms of paralegals that can provide a commercial law function. There is of course often a compromise on salary but the legal experience (in addition to the contacts that you can make within those firms), can stand you in good stead as roles do emerge. Above all else it shows the determination on your part to pursue your chose career within the law.

Equally, the insurance job market remains buoyant and has always proven capable of retraining people at the junior even if they have no direct experience on insurance work. If that is something you would wish to consider then please do speak to us and we can give you an overview of what is out there.

Whilst there may be no financial benefit, volunteer work whether for CAB or local law centres (or indeed within local law firms) can also provide useful experience that will all add further to your CV.

There are any number of options but first and foremost it is important to not lose hope on securing a role. You can rest assured that we will be doing everything that we can to identify and push roles far beyond September.
