So what does 2018 look like for employment lawyers?

One of the big changes of 2017 was the ruling made by the Supreme Court to scrap employment tribunal claims following UNISONs landmark victory against the government earlier this year.

The Supreme Court overturned decisions by the High Court in 2013 and the Court of Appeal in 2015. Anyone who has been treated illegally and unfairly at work will no longer have to pay to take their employers to court and more than £27million will be refunded to people who have been charged over the last 4 years.

The Law Gazette reported in early December that according to the National User Group of Employment Tribunals, the number of employment tribunal claims being brought has in some areas, doubled. It has been reported that ACAS had been receiving around 350 ET1s per week before the UNISON decision and is now handling up to 700.

So what is the outcome for solicitors and lawyers keen to explore the job market as we enter 2018? Since the ruling in July, we’ve seen a 10% increase in employment law instructions over the first half of 2017. It is expected that there will be an upturn in employment law opportunities as we move into 2018 but it may take time before we see the full impact of this.
