Halewood Wines and Spirits is a leading independent manufacturer and distributor of alcoholic beverages in the United Kingdom, with businesses in South Africa, China and Thailand, exporting to over 100 countries. It has a strong portfolio of products, with Whitley Neill being the flagship premium gin, supported by a collection of artisanal spirits products such as JJ Whitley, Liverpool Gin, City of London Gin, Dead Man's Fingers rums, in addition to whiskeys, craft beers including the Hawkshead Brewery range and Sadler's Peaky Blinders, as well as legacy brands Crabbie's and Lambrini.

The Legal Team

A small, friendly team led by the Head of Legal and which also includes an Administrative Assistant and a part-time consultant Trade Mark Attorney.

The Role

Working alongside the Head of Legal, you will provide legal support to the UK business and international business. This is a varied and busy role to include regular work and projects such as:
· Providing legal advice in the areas of company/commercial, IP, IT, advertising and marketing, data protection and other regulatory matters.
· Drafting or advising on basic commercial contracts, such as product promotion agreements, sponsorship agreements, supply and distribution agreements
· Advising on advertising and marketing, including checking terms and conditions for promotions/competitions, and advising on compliance with alcohol codes of practice and labelling
· Sponsorship contracts such as Tour of Britain and rugby teams
· Dealing with the initial stages of various commercial disputes, including drafting letters before claim and instructing counsel where appropriate
· Compliance work, including ensuring the business complies with the Modern Slavery Act, GDPR, the Bribery Act, as well as ensuring you are aware of any incoming legislation which may impact the business.
· Seeking external advice as required (for example, property, employment, litigation).
· Providing occasional staff training on legal areas such as the Bribery Act, competition law, GSCOP, CAP, ASA, Portman Group and other industry relevant developments.
· Company secretarial work such as producing board minutes, undertaking the filing requirements for all UK companies (eg filing Confirmation Statements), managing director appointments / resignations.
· There are opportunities to assist on corporate transactions
· Working closely with the Trade Mark Attorney to advise on and manage IP disputes and issues.

The role will require the successful applicant to want to work in a busy FMCG business, with work varying from day to day, responding to the business but also being able to manage expectations. It requires someone who is able to work with a wide range of people across the business (including directors and heads of department), providing commercial, legal advice.

You will need

· Ideally from a corporate/commercial background, with experience of working with clients in FMCG, or already an in-house lawyer seeking a varied, exciting role in an evolving business
· An ability to establish a high degree of credibility and trust at all levels, including with senior members of organisations.
· Strong personal communication skills, capable of dealing with people from varied backgrounds and work as part of a team.
· Effective planning and organising skills to prioritise key areas of responsibility, tasks and projects. Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines.
· Experience in or knowledge of IP law is an advantage but not a requirement.
