BCL Legal Supports Manchester BPP Law School’s ‘Career Ready Day’

Vicky Clark was invited by Manchester BPP Law School to participate in a panel discussion and Q&A with the students last Thursday. The main topic was the implementation of the Legal Services Act and how the legal jobs market has changed as a result. Alongside Sophie Taylor from Addleshaw Goddard, Ele Lovering from Eversheds, Luiza Da Costa from Express Solicitors as well as Hannah Burgess and Georgina Anwyl from Freshfields, Vicky was asked a variety of questions surrounding the legal market today.

The Legal Services Act, which took effect in October 2011, promised to overhaul the legal profession. Companies that were not law firms were able to start offering legal services for the first time, while law firms could begin to take investment from third parties. These new entities would be known as alternative business structures. The aim of the game was to make legal services more accessible however almost five years down the line and it’s not just new entrants that are disrupting the legal market, innovation, technology, mergers and an international platform have led to change for all.

Vicky said: “we were free to discuss the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to law firms today. Lots of interesting debate took place and I hope the law students gained an insight from the panellists into what is happening right now on the ground”.

BCL Legal and BCL Graduates will be attending law fairs at Manchester College of Law on 13 April, Leeds BPP on 20 April, Manchester BPP and Warwick University to follow. Consultants will be on hand to offer advice particularly if students would like a review of their CV and cover letter please bring them along.
