The most common interview question and how to answer it!
Regardless of your level of seniority or industry sector, and regardless of the role you're interviewing for (or the style of interview) one question comes up again and again. It’s a seemingly straightforward question that can have a massive impact on the outcome of the interview. Unfortunately, a majority of people answer it badly.
Why are you interested in working for us?
One of the most common errors is for interviewees to start listing the reasons they want to leave their current employer. Another is to start regurgitating the 'about us' section of the company’s website.
Neither approach actually answers the question. In fact, the second is quite lazy and demonstrates an inability to process and use information.
Look at the question again – what's it really asking?
Why are YOU interested in (working for) US?
By its very nature, the answer to this question needs to be personal. Does the company in question have a good diversity policy or a high number of female Partners? Are they active in networking and run a lot of social events? Are they known for their CSR activities or contributing to good causes?
It might be the case that you think employment with a particular employer will have a positive effect on your career. Therefore, it's fine to talk about type of work, clients, training, development and size.
So, back to the question: Why are you interested in working for us?
It’s one question, requiring a reasonably short answer. Remember, make it personal and let the employer know that YOU are genuinely interested in THEM.
