Data Privacy – The next big thing

I’ve worked as an interim legal recruiter for the past 15 years and during this time I’ve come to realise that the there seems to be a demand for a certain skill set at any given time.

In recent years the demand in London has been very much focused on transactional real estate lawyers and litigation lawyers. The property market has been booming and this has created a steady demand for real estate lawyers to plug gaps in busy teams across the City. With the recent regulatory investigations in the financial services sector, LIBOR and FX created a strong and unprecedented demand for litigators to work on lengthy and complex document review projects. Whilst there will always be a need for these skillsets in the interim market in London, most recently there seems to be a surge for a new skillset emerging.

It seems that everyone is currently looking to hire Data Protection and Data Privacy lawyers, no doubt with GDPR around the corner in May 2018 everyone needs to ensure that they and their clients are ready and compliant when it comes to handling data. Having spoken to a number of firms and candidates it seems that the demand for Data Protection and Privacy lawyers will continue to rise post May 2018 and probably for the next 5 years.

Information technology has now become an integral part of business and life, more so than ever before and will continue to do so. I don’t think Data Protection even existed 15 years ago, and certainly not to the extent that it does so now and every day we hear new terms which are becoming part of everyday life; cloud computing, destructive data, capturing data, storing data big data and cyber security to name a few.

With the increasing use of Information technology and gathering of people’s personal information comes the responsibility of managing it correctly and in a safe way and therefore we see the increased demand for experts who can advise on this new and emerging area. We are currently recruiting for a number of firms who are looking to hire experienced Data Privacy and IT lawyers to work on interim assignments. If you are a Data Privacy lawyer looking for a new and exciting opportunity please contact BCL Legal or call 0845 241 0933.
