Looking for a fresh start in 2015?

The preparation for a career change usually starts long before the clock strikes midnight on New Years’ eve. Securing a new role can take some time, so now is the time to start considering what actions you will need to take.

If a new job is on the agenda it’s key top start the ball rolling before the new year rush. Contrary to popular belief, clients are hiring now.

A good place to start would be to update your CV and register with a recruitment consultancy that genuinely specialises in the area you wish to work. Choosing the right consultancy can be a key factor in helping you find the right role for you. By working alongside a specialist consultant you have access to market knowledge as they can be first to hear about new positions whilst having close working relationships with their clients which in my case could be a small high street practice or large international firm. It is our job to hold your hand every step of the way. A key part of a consultants job is to really drill down into why you are looking to move whether it is for salary, relocation or career progression and offer advice where necessary to help us find the perfect fit for you. Many of the consultants I currently work with at BCL Legal are either ex lawyers themselves or have worked within a law firm environment giving them a different angle to most. It is our job to ensure our candidates are not just given specialist advice but also a smooth journey at what can be a confusing and stressful time.

Why stop there, make sure you cover all the bases. Speak to your work colleagues and business contacts who may be able to put a word in where possible and consider searching both online and offline to give yourself the broadest array of opportunities.

There is no hard and fast rule about the best time to begin your job search as some firms will look to have the required resource in place before the year is out whereas others will wait until the new before they hit the recruitment drive button. It is key however to make sure that when you decide to begin your search you are prepared if the right opportunity catches your attention.
