North East private practice legal salary review – 2022

We have seen a lot of changes to salaries over the last 12 months across the UK, and the legal market in the North East is no exception.

There is no doubt that the market is currently very candidate driven, which is great for the solicitors we support and help to find the right opportunity. New opportunities are more appealing than ever!

It comes as no surprise that the international firms have led the way on salaries – we have seen dramatic changes at all levels, but these types of firms have been particularly noteworthy, with NQ salaries reaching as high as £65,000. The range at this level is generally between £47,000 and £65,000.

The national and larger regional firms’ salaries have followed suit and are focused on staying competitive. NQ salaries at this level are ranging between £40,000 and £48,000.

The smaller regional and mid/lower tier firms are looking anywhere between £30,000 and £41,000 at the moment.

Cultural fit

Culture is more important than ever before. It has become apparent that people are making sure they are getting the right fit.

This has become particularly obvious from the demand for hybrid working. Most firms now offer some element of hybrid working and the general trend is two-to-three days in the office – a 50/50 split between home and office working is something we’re hearing about more and more.

The reality is that it depends on your level – the more experienced you are, the more relaxed the hybrid working requirements are.

Some firms are trying to promote returning to the office more, but this seems very much dependent on individual teams’ preferences. We may see a bit more of divide on this over the next 12 months.

As per the cyclical nature of the legal market, we have seen different practice areas thrive at different times throughout the year. Currently real estate, corporate, commercial litigation and family roles appear to be in the most demand.
