Is it too soon for a blog about solicitor jobs in 2013?

As 2012 draws to a close BCL Legal remain very busy recruiting for solicitor jobs at all levels across a variety of commercial disciplines. I currently have roles for corporate, commercial, construction, real estate, banking, commercial litigation, property litigation and employment solicitors. This is offset by news of redundancies at some leading practices.

So what does 2013 hold in store for the legal profession? As far as recruitment is concerned it seems likely that uncertain times and fluctuating markets will continue to create opportunities. Where some firm’s loose business, others pick it up – creating an opportunity for someone. Certainly most large law firms have gaps created by lack of training/ retention in 2008, 2009 and 2010. If you are a solicitor who qualified in those years and were able to gain good stable experience in corporate, commercial, construction, real estate, banking, commercial litigation, property litigation or employment then massive opportunities exist. Certainly those candidates at mid tier firms who wish to make a step up to a national or international practice will find plenty of options. BCL Legal are, of course, happy to discuss details of any solicitor jobs with you.

In the last few months it has also become apparent that there are more roles around for solicitors with greater experience. These have included several roles as effective number 2’s in a department – that naturally offer reasonably quick progression to Partnership. After 12 months of focussing on roles for candidates are the start of their qualified careers it has been surprising to see these sorts of roles appearing in October and November. Essentially teams are busy and heads of department need experienced people to supervise the team whilst they are out of the office winning new business. This in itself looks positive for 2013.

So is it all good news? Clearly talk of redundancies is worrying but is very limited at the moment. Also salaries have remained fairly stagnant for solicitor jobs, certainly with regional offices of national and international practices. Given remaining uncertainty in the market it seems unlikely that salaries will rise next year, however if one large firm decides to raise salaries it is likely that all will follow.

All in all I am expecting an exciting and interesting 2013 with some opportunities for candidates at all levels. Do please call me if you wish to discuss any options for corporate, commercial, construction, real estate, banking, commercial litigation, property litigation or employment solicitors at any level.
