Taking the Plunge: My Journey into Legal Recruitment
From Solicitor to Legal Recruiter: A New Chapter in My Career
For many newly qualified solicitors, the path to qualification is clear: work experience, a three-year law degree, a vacation placement, one year of the LPC, and a two-year training contract. After years of hard work and dedication, you finally qualify as a solicitor, and you’re ready to embark on a fulfilling career in law.
But what happens when that dream job no longer feels like the right fit?
I started my legal journey at the age of 16, securing work experience at a law firm in Manchester. From that moment on, becoming a solicitor was my sole focus. I worked tirelessly, and by 2015, I had achieved my goal – I qualified as a solicitor and started working at a respected law firm, surrounded by experienced colleagues who had much to teach me.
However, by 2018, I found myself at a crossroads. After a few years of practicing as a solicitor, I began reassessing my goals and realizing that the path I had worked so hard to achieve might not be the one I wanted to continue down. It wasn’t an easy decision, and leaving behind a career I had invested so much time, effort, and money into was incredibly difficult.
So, what happened next?
Re-evaluating My Career Goals
Once the excitement of qualification wore off, I took a step back and reflected on my career. Despite my love for law, I realized that practicing as a solicitor no longer aligned with my long-term aspirations. It was a tough decision, and it wasn’t without doubt or second-guessing.
Like many others, I was asked, "What’s next?" I didn’t want to lose the legal experience I had gained over the years, but I also didn’t want to continue on a path that no longer felt right for me. Legal recruitment seemed like the perfect fit.
I remembered my experience with BCL Legal as a candidate when I was nearing qualification. I was impressed by their professionalism, their knowledge, and their ability to connect me with the right opportunities. So, I reached out to them to explore the possibility of transitioning into recruitment.
Making the Transition: A Smooth Shift to Legal Recruitment
One of the most significant aspects of my transition from legal practice to legal recruitment was BCL Legal’s deep understanding of the challenges and complexities involved in making such a significant career shift. Many of their consultants have made the same leap from law to recruitment, so they genuinely understood the weight of my decision. It was reassuring to know they were committed to ensuring that this was the right step for me.
Although I had no prior recruitment experience, the support I received from BCL has been outstanding. From the start, the training has been comprehensive, and the culture is incredibly supportive. My manager has been a great resource, always available to answer my many questions (and there have been plenty!). Each day is filled with new learning opportunities, and I find myself enjoying the pace and variety of the role. Even though it’s only been a few weeks, I already feel at home and have no regrets about taking the plunge into legal recruitment.
Looking Forward: A New and Exciting Challenge
The transition from solicitor to legal recruiter hasn’t been without its challenges, but I’m excited to bring my legal background into this new role. I’m speaking with fascinating people, learning new things every day, and contributing to the legal industry in a fresh and exciting way.
If you’re considering making a similar shift or exploring opportunities within legal recruitment, know that it’s a journey worth considering. With the right support and guidance, you can bring your legal expertise into this dynamic
