What should you expect from your recruitment consultant?

Looking for a new job or making a career move can be a big step. One that should be made easier by speaking to a recruitment consultant who really knows and understands the current job market, your industry and your needs.

Over the past couple of weeks I have heard some real horror stories and this, coupled with personal experience has made me reflect on what you should expect of a good recruitment consultant. My personal opinion is that your recruitment consultant should be, well, consultative. Here at BCL Legal, we work on the basis that our first conversation with you should establish what it is that you are looking for, not just in terms of a role but also the environment, working hours, company ethos etc. This helps us understand which of the roles that we are working on could be right for you. Searching for a new role can be a daunting prospect sometimes but we take the time to talk you through how the opportunities that we are working on can meet with what you’re looking for.

As a specialist in shipping law recruitment I try to use my knowledge of the shipping law arena (both in-house and private practice) to assist candidates throughout their search. A good recruiter should be able to take what you are telling them and know enough about the market and your industry to talk you through the opportunities available to you. Recently I have been able to assist a number of candidates in their search for a new role just by understanding what it is that they are really looking for – and then suggesting opportunities that they may not have normally considered.

But your recruitment consultant should not just be sending your CV to a job and arranging the interview. At BCL Legal we do our best to prepare candidates for the interview process by providing as much information beforehand, as well as taking the time to sit down with you and answering any questions that you may have. If it’s been a while since you have had an interview we will happily conduct a “mock-interview” with you. We do our best to make sure that you feel as comfortable and confident as possible when you walk in to your interview, and when you walk out we are always happy to meet with you again to fully debrief and discuss how it went.

Fundamentally, at BCL Legal we do our best to ensure that the new role that we place you in to is your dream job. And on that heart-warming note, I wish you all a very merry festive period and a happy new year!
