Women ruling the world…

July has been an eventful month!

So what happened?

- Well, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will know that Theresa May has now been named as Britain’s Prime Minister. This is only the second female Prime Minister that Britain has ever had. In her first full day as PM she sacked a variety of male MPs who had dominated the headlines most recently, and recruited female MPs into these big posts. It is true: a week is a long time in politics…

- The new Ghost Busters movie hit our screens. The remake of the 1984 blockbuster now has a solely female cast. The comedic foursome of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones have been named as some of the most magnificent females in comedy, and they are illustrating that you don’t need to be male to fight ghosts and fend off ghouls. Whilst the initial announcement of this cast in January 2015 was met with a range of sexist and misogynistic abuse across social media, the reviews are that it’s an “epic action comedy”. So who you gonna call?

- Wimbledon 2016 drew to an end with Andy Murray and Serena Williams claiming their second and seventh singles titles respectively. Williams, during an interview following her win, was asked what it’s like to be one of the greatest female athletes of all time, she retorted “I prefer the words ‘one of the greatest athletes of all time’”. Game, set and match.

These are just a few examples of women doing what was once thought of as impossible. Four weeks ago, when the vacancy arose for the new PM, who would have thought that two out of the three possible candidates would be female!

Gender aside, to all job seekers alike, I say; focus on what you do have, not what you don’t have and think about your transferrable skills. Face problems head on and provide solutions. Be confident! In a profession which is by the large part male dominated, recent statistics show that women hold the most associate level positions across legal practices. Girl Power!
