Your wish is my command…

I love crime dramas! I have been hooked on them since the days of The Bill being on ITV. So, imagine my dismay when I find out they have moved it to a random Sky channel, which in my opinion, is a crime in itself!

Looking back though, I think my love of crime dramas is what initially sparked my interest in becoming a criminal lawyer and joining a criminal law firm when I started my legal career. I was drawn by the excitement and thrill that dealing with criminal cases holds. Never a dull moment; no two days the same.

I remember at only 19 years old when I interviewed for a position at a firm in Birmingham and the senior partner said to me, "Hmmm, well you're quite young so I need to consider what sort of cases you're exposed to at this age". From that moment I was hooked!

Training to become a police station representative was like a dream come true. Going behind the closed doors of a real police station, with real police officers and people who have committed (or not, as the case may be) real crimes; I felt like I was in an episode of Police, Camera, Action!

In reality my career at a criminal law firm was a lot of nights on call, a lot of unsavoury characters and the constant threat of redundancy led by legal aid cuts. At the time however no one could talk me out of this career route; this is what I desperately wanted to do, so I did it!

Now, working in legal recruitment and speaking daily to candidates all seeking their dream role I remember what it felt like chasing that dream. I can completely relate when candidates tell me what the perfect opportunity would look like for them, what their ideal would be, and what they would love to do if we had a magic wand.

I truly believe that it’s important to remember what you would love to do, and why you chose this career path in the first place. It may be that this dream role doesn’t exist in reality or that we have to think a little outside the box to make the available roles work for you, but that’s my job as a consultant at BCL Legal; to get to grips with what exactly your dream job would be, to be consultative and make suggestions as to how the available roles might work for you, and then, when you’ve made the decision, facilitate the move to your new job.

You're going to do this job 5 days a week, 47(ish) weeks a year, so it's important that you find a role which you love! It never hurts to reach for the moon; if you fall short, at least you'll land among the stars.

Please give us a call to discuss what your options are and whether we have an opportunity which might be just what you are looking for. Contact BCL Legal or call 0121 230 1020.
