Our client is a national company providing engineering, energy, building and construction, and project management services to a client base that includes major PLCs, multinationals, and local and central government organisations. The company has involvement in a wide range of projects and services, including design and build, mechanical and electrical infrastructure, design commissions and management, PFI / PPP, facilities management, and maintenance and improvement works.
About the Role - Senior Legal Counsel (Construction / Projects):
A 12-18 months Senior Legal Counsel position has been created to support the in-house legal department with complex construction matters related to PFI / PPP contracts, predominantly involving education, healthcare and local government customers.
A number of clients are seeking to develop, extend and/or refurbish the buildings under the PFI / PPP contract, and this has raised a contractual and service provision complexities for which my client requires support from an experienced and capable UK construction / projects solicitor with at least 10 years' PQE.
This role will undoubtedly be an interesting and challenging role, with specific duties to include:
- providing transactional support to the PFI project teams, including drafting and negotiating project, construction and commercial contracts, including PFI / PPP documentation such as Deeds of Variation, Early Works Agreements, Letters of Indemnity;
- grappling with the complexities presented by PFI and PPP structures, and taking an active role in client relationship development & management, leading elements of negotiations, calls and meetings;
- ensuring compliance with legal requirements and internal governance by engaging with key stakeholders and reporting to the business;
- managing multiple projects simultaneously to ensure deadlines are met and risks are mitigated;
- working alongside and proactively managing external legal resource where applicable.
You should be prepared to go a step further than simply undertaking the legal work, and you will need to consider the wider implications of project works on site operations & the delivery of services under the teams of the PFI / PPP contract.
About you:
Due to the complexities of the PFI / PPP, our client is seeking someone who can deal with complex construction and strategic projects matters, often managing multiple projects simultaneously, and providing practical and commercial legal advice across various sectors.
Applications are encouraged from experienced UK (England & Wales or Scotland) qualified construction and/or projects solicitors with at least 10 years' PQE. You must have the ability to manage your own matters, and aspects of major projects, with limited supervision.
A strong grounding in standard industry construction contracts (JCT, NEC) and ancillary documents such as collateral warranties, PCGs, Performance Bonds is a must.

In addition to a flexible approach to location, my client can also consider an element of part-time working - 4 or 5 day options will be considered. Should you wish to undertake a day a week work elsewhere, this is also an option so long as you are not conflicted.
The salary and package is competitive at up to £120,000, and a circa £6.5k car allowance. A discretionary bonus also applies.
