Big Up to the East Midlands!

In October 2016 I wrote a blog about Nottingham - https://www.bcllegal.com/knowledge-base/from-the-team/ever-heard-of-nottingham

Did anyone read it? No? Why not?

I am personally offended. What does the East Midlands not have that every legal professional is looking for? I am striving to get the East Midlands noticed. Some might say, against all odds I am on a one woman campaign.

Nottingham, as a legal market has a lot to offer and I have mentioned previously that it has now been named in the top 10 legal centres in the UK. One of the real USP’s of the East Midlands is that is a very diverse legal market. If you are looking for large international practices – tick, if you are looking for something more regional – tick, if you are looking for a solid well established practice in the rural countryside – tick!

The global brand that is Eversheds has chosen to cement itself in the Nottingham market; Browne Jacobson and Freeths LLP, offering some of the highest quality services to international and national clients have their HQs in Nottingham; Leicestershire based practice Spearing Waite has a team focusing on property finance and banking dealing with a range of complex disputes, representing a desirable list of major lending institutions, lenders, and private financiers.

These are but some of my clients!

Shakespeare Martineau is based in the East and West Midlands and is now the second largest law firm in the Midlands – this wouldn’t be a fact if the East Midlands offices didn’t exist and that is inclusive of 2 offices in Leicester, one of which has been around for nearly 250 years!

East Midlands based practice Geldards LLP has recently acted for the Business Growth Fund, a transaction that has been ranked as one of the top 20 deals in the Midlands, and the Nottingham office of Gateley PLC has aided in the sale of Bonds Confectionery which is one of the oldest confectionary companies in the UK.

Looking for something a little more niche? Look no further than Nelsons Solicitors Limited. A solid East Midlands based practice that can offer an opportunity to work for a team dedicated to servicing telecoms, media and technology sector clients for contentious and non-contentious issues.

Talking about a diverse legal market, if you want to go a little more rural look a little deeper into the many villages and towns throughout the region and you will find Fraser Brown, BHW and Cummins Solicitors where you will get genuine partner contact and larger levels of autonomy at really early stages of your career. All of these are still Legal 500 ranked!

Now you are well and truly interested in the firms, your next consideration, I imagine, will be the salary. Will firms offer lower salaries in the East Midlands? No is the short answer. All of the major players and heavyweights will match the salaries offered in the larger city offices (bar London of course!). Actually, because the cost of living is lower outside of the large cities, your disposable income may well be more….

Just think about it. Competition for the roles will be less because your counterpart is likely to be blinded by the lights of the larger legal centres; the doors you could open are endless!

So, which part of what I have said above means you are not winning if you work in the East Midlands?
