Boom and Bust

Over the past week we have seen yet another spate of personal injury redundancies in the North West. Hill Dickinson have decided to put at risk 40 people across their insurance fraud teams in Manchester and Liverpool. As a recruitment consultant at BCL Legal entirely focused on the personal injury and insurance sector this is latest round of these cuts we have seen in the past six months.

DAC Beachcroft made its insurance fraud team in Manchester redundant not long ago and we have seen a spate of previous claimant PI recruiters returning to their roots within EL/PL or RTA teams. This is a total turn around from 2 or 3 years ago when claimant personal injury lawyers were escaping to move to a move secure and “Jackson proof” area.

It appears that this is the latest casualty in the war against fixed fee work. Firms are all working to really tight budgets for the main stream work and so have had no choice but to change their business models.

Firms such as Quindell who have recently entered the Manchester market have benefited from this surge of good personal injury litigators suddenly being available as they have been able to offer good homes for some of these people with RTA and industrial disease (predominantly NIHL) teams.

For candidates now reconnecting with recruiters its worth noting that salaries are now very different and opportunities fewer, so its worth keeping an open mind on ideas your recruiter may have.
