How very rude…

2014 was a superb year for BCL Legal and recruitment across the legal profession as a whole. With one of the worst economic recessions in our nation’s history firmly behind us and employment on the rise across all sectors, things really did start to look up and pick up in 2014. Specialising in commercial property, I am glad to say that this trend has continued into 2015; we’re only two weeks into the New Year but we’re already remarkably busy in terms of new candidate registrations and new job instructions from clients, interviews taking place and offers being made. All in all I can’t complain.

The foundation in the service we provide to both clients and candidates is simple – matching the right people with the right jobs. In a previous blog I have referenced the similarities between ourselves and an online dating agency. I’ve given this some thought recently and the principles are very much the same; when dating or when interviewing there are a few things that have to be considered and mutually agreed. As a recruiter I act on trust but for the most part I have things agreed in writing. As a single man in his twenties, when it comes to dating, I have to mostly act on trust until a relationship (potentially) starts to bloom. Recently I had arranged to meet a young lady who I had been dating for a while, but I was stood up. No text messages, no calls, no message via courier pigeon, no communication whatsoever. This was terribly embarrassing and very frustrating but it did get me thinking…

There are rare occasions when candidates don’t turn up to interviews. As your recruiter this is terribly embarrassing and very frustrating. When we arrange an interview we do so based on an element of trust and understanding, which is then shared with the client. If you don’t show up and don’t tell us beforehand, without a legitimate and reasonable explanation, this trust is then fractured and it likely ruins your chances of securing a position with that firm either now or in the future. As such, some things to consider: When you approach the market to search for a new job, make sure you are doing so for the right reasons and you’re sure that you want to move; If you have doubts, whatever they may be, then talk to your recruiter – there’s a strong possibility we’ll be able to give you some advice on the matter; and, if you are not going to attend an interview, for whatever reason, then tell your recruiter in good time.
