The senior partner at the top-50 full-service UK firm Freeths share her passions and interests with the Brief.
How do you like to start the day?
I prefer the start the day naturally, without the alarm going off. I like to wake up and do the New York Times Spelling Bee with my husband before we get out of bed. Then, some gym, yoga, or a brisk walk, before savouring a nice latte. The aroma is often as good as the drink.
What’s your favourite object in your office/home office?
A large painting of a male lion: imposing, black and white, with some splashes of colour.
Who is your closest colleague?
One of our other office managing partners.
Do you have a favourite family heirloom?
An intricately carved sideboard from India or Bali (this part is a little hazy) that my great aunt left me in her will.
What’s your favourite song of all time?
“We Are the Champions”, Queen.
What’s your favourite play?
I’m more into musicals. Phantom of the Opera.
Who’s your favourite movie star?
It has to be Daniel Craig. I absolutely love action-packed films, and the James Bond series has everything: intrigue, the unexpected, saving the world, great British humour, not to mention amazing sets and fast cars. Pure escapism!
What’s your favourite book?
The Glass Protocol written by my husband Nigel Payne. It’s his first book, a sci-fi and just published. It is based in the future, in an AI-smoothed world of seamless living. But smoothed becomes controlled and the AI needs to be stopped from taking over. I love the book, it’s a triumph. It’s extra special because of the author, of course.
What book are you reading right now?
Brené Brown, Dare to Lead.
What book do you wish you had written?
A travel guide. I love exploring places as well as photography.
What’s the greatest invention of all time?
Jet engine. I love to travel.

I played hockey to a pretty good level, but was always pretty hopeless at tennis. So, it would have to be tennis.
Who inspires you in business?
Simon Sinek/Stephen Covey/Sir Clive Woodward.
In the office do you dress up, dress down or somewhere in between?
Dress up – I love colour.
Where do you go to relax?
Forest bathing. Walking through the woods close to where I live – it’s an ever-changing scene and being close to nature soothes my soul.
What country have you always wanted to visit?
There are quite a few, but top of the list is Jordan and Petra.
Besides your phone, what do you always have with you?
My lipstick!
What’s the best part of your job?
The people, be they clients or colleagues. I love finding solutions and also helping people to succeed and grow.
How do you unwind after work?
A good movie or series. Just watching The Night Manager and Run Away – the Harlan Coben series. I also love his books.
Finally, what’s your guilty pleasure?
Chocolate!
