Danielle Connell, a newly qualified solicitor in Thorntons’ IP, media and technology team, has been appointed as a committee member to the Trainee and Newly Qualified Society, which is run by the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow.
Celtic Football Club has announced the appointment of Michael Nicholson as chief executive. Nicholson has held the position of acting chief executive since early September 2021. He was formerly Celtic’s director of legal and football affairs and has been with the club since 2013.
Ampersand has announced that Susanne Tanner QC has been commissioned as Assistant Principal Crown Counsel.
Tony Graham QC, stable director at Optimum Advocates in Glasgow, has been elected as the new chairman of Faculty Services Limited.

Christine O’Neill QC, chairman of Brodies LLP, has been re-elected to serve a fourth consecutive term in the role commencing 1 May 2022.

Personal Injury specialist, Iain Nicol has joined Thorntons as a consultant. He has 30 years’ experience as a solicitor and has been accredited in personal injury law since 2003. He is a fellow of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers. Nicol will be based in the firm’s Edinburgh office where he will work with the PI team.
Gillespie Macandrew has announced a number of promotions. Andrew Leslie (housebuilder), Sarah-Jane Macdonald (private client) and Ross MacRae (banking and finance) have been promoted to legal director. Caitlin Keegan (residential property) and Rae Gilchrist (energy and strategic land) are promoted to associate, and Conner McConnell (dispute resolution), Ross Matthew (residential property) and
Cheryl Hogg (land and rural business) are promoted to senior solicitor.
Shakespeare Martineau has appointed a new dual-qualified legal director. With almost ten years’ experience working in Scotland, Nicky Grant has joined the firm’s commercial real estate team and will be based in Edinburgh. He has a breadth of experience across all areas of commercial property, including acquisition and disposals, commercial leasing, commercial developments, managing investment properties, acting on utilities and energy projects, corporate assist work, acting on behalf of healthcare providers, and real estate finance.

Murgitroyd has acquired the Glasgow- based IP specialist firm, Creation IP. Creation IP is jointly owned by its founders, Bryn Williams and John Collins, both experienced patent attorneys who started the business in 2012 having previously worked together at another UK IP firm. Creation IP has 12 team members, all of whom are transferring to Murgitroyd upon completion of the acquisition. The business will move from its current base in Hillington Park Innovation Centre, Glasgow, to Murgitroyd’s head office in central Glasgow.

Anderson Strathern has hired Tom McEntegart as a partner in the firm’s Glasgow office. McEntegart has over two decades of experience in advising SMEs and corporates on banking, property, licensing and commercial disputes. McEntegart was admitted as a solicitor advocate in 2003, and is a Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors-accredited evaluative mediator.
Brodies has added to its family practice with the appointment of Jacqueline Stroud, who joins the firm as partner. With more than 30 years’ experience in family law, Stroud will be based in Brodies’ Edinburgh office. Whilst specialising in financial provision work and in mediation, she will work with clients on a broad spectrum of family law matters.
Raeburn Christie Clark & Wallace has appointed Carolyn Richards as a partner in the housebuilding team, part of the commercial property department. Richards has almost 30 years’ experience in the new homes sector.
Raeburn Christie Clark & Wallace has promoted Anne Littlejohn, Gavin Cooper and Scott Rennie to partners in the residential property team. Littlejohn, who joined RCCW in 2012, has extensive experience in residential conveyancing matters and is based in Aberdeen. Cooper, a solicitor with over 25 years’ residential conveyancing experience in the North East, is also based in Aberdeen. Rennie, who joined the firm as an associate in 2019 when RCCW took over Connons, is based in Stonehaven.
Fiona Coutts and Faye Donald, partners at Raeburn Christie Clark & Wallace, have become accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as specialists in family law.
Lindsays has welcomed partner Helen Kidd to the firm’s charities and third sector team. Kidd is accredited as a specialist in charity law by the Law Society of Scotland and is a charity trustee, having sat on the board of a national youth work organisation, and currently sitting on the board of an independent school. She has experience of supporting the setting-up, merging and winding up of charities, as well as advising on matters relating to governance, charity tax, trustee training and dealing with regulatory matters in the sector.
Ledingham Chalmers LLP has announced that Inverness-based partner Victoria Leslie has joined the firm’s board, becoming a full equity partner. She heads up the litigation department in Inverness, acting for commercial, public and private sector clients. She specialises in contractual disputes as well as contentious executry and will matters. Leslie joined Ledingham Chalmers in 2007 and became a partner the year later.
Ledingham Chalmers LLP has promoted senior associates in the corporate team Sarah Londragan and Andrew Stott, based in Stirling and Inverness respectively, to partner.
Thorntons has promoted three new property partners. They are Nicola McCafferty in Dundee, Aimee Gibbons in Glasgow, and Hannah Fraser in Edinburgh. McCafferty is a commercial real estate lawyer and joined the firm in 2016 as an associate after training at Blackadders. Gibbons is a commercial real estate partner who joined the firm as a trainee nine years ago. Fraser is a residential property partner who joined the firm in 2017 after the merger with Pagan Osborne.
Aberdein Considine has announced that it is to merge with Edinburgh law firm and solicitor estate agent Russel + Aitken Edinburgh LLP. Dianne Paterson and Alan Jones, equity partners at Russel + Aitken Edinburgh, will join Aberdein Considine as consultants.
Blackadders LLP has announced that managing partner, Johnston Clark, will stand down at the end of July 2022. He will be succeeded by Emma Gray (head of commercial property) and Ryan McKay (head of dispute resolution) as joint managing partners serving an initial three- year term. Clark will continue as chief executive of Blackadders Wealth Management LLP.
McKee Campbell Morrison has appointed Michael Flett as an associate director in the corporate team.
Harper Macleod has made five partner promotions. Leigh Beirne leads the firm’s private client practice in Shetland and joined the firm as a trainee. Beirne advises individuals and families, specialising in the administration of complex and high value estates, the preparation of wills, inheritance tax planning, and financial and welfare powers of attorney. Tom Gray is a member of the rural team, based in Glasgow. He represents a range of clients in relation to farm, forestry and estate purchases across Scotland. Jenni Gear is a member of the family law team, based in Lerwick. Gear predominantly advises clients on the full range of family matters including separation, divorce, and child residence and contact disputes. With a wide breadth of sheriff court experience, she is also a child welfare reporter and curator at Lerwick Sheriff Court. She is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in family law. Ricardo Matteo is based in the banking team in Glasgow. Matteo joined the firm as a trainee and is experienced acting for both lenders and borrowers in a wide range of high-value and complex corporate transactions. Laura McLean, a member of the family team, is based in the firm’s Elgin and Inverness offices. She advises clients on a wide range of family issues, and is an experienced litigator.
MacArthur Stewart has merged with MacPhee & Partners. The merger will see Fort William based MacArthur Stewart transfer to larger counterpart MacPhee & Partners, with offices in Fort William, Oban and Tiree.
MacPhee & Partners has announced the promotion of Billie Smith to partner. Smith joined the firm as a trainee solicitor and qualified in 2017. She specialises in the fields of family law (separations, divorce, pre/post-nups, cohabitee rights, children, adoptions etc), & private client (wills, powers of attorney, guardianships and executries).
Dentons has appointed Alison Weatherhead as practice group leader for the UK people, reward and mobility (PRM) team. An employment partner based in Glasgow, Weatherhead previously led the firm’s PRM practice in Scotland. The UK PRM team consists of six partners and more than 45 employment, pensions, employee benefits and immigration lawyers.

Shoosmiths has made two real estate partner appointments in Scotland. Ian McCann has joined the Edinburgh office as a construction partner. He was previously with CMS and has nearly 20 years’ experience in non-contentious construction law. Lyndsey O’Connor joins as a real estate partner in the Glasgow office. Meanwhile, Shoosmiths has promoted Lauren Miller, who joined the Glasgow office as a legal director in 2021, has been promoted to real estate partner with effect from 1 May 2022. She has 15 years’ experience across the spectrum of commercial property work.
Anderson Strathern has announced that Mark Templeton has joined the firm as a director and head of immigration. He moves from specialist immigration law firm Quinn, Martin & Langan.

Macdonald Henderson has announced the appointment of Michael Strain as a solicitor in the dispute resolution team. Strain is an experienced litigator, regularly advising clients on a broad variety of commercial and personal disputes including debt recovery, contractual disputes, intellectual property claims and professional negligence.
Clyde & Co has announced the promotions of Kirsty Cassidy, Colette Finnieston, Natalie Gibb, David Hutchison, Gary Nicholls and Ameeta Panesar to legal director in Scotland, as part of its 2022 promotions round. Five of the promotions are in the firm’s insurance practice, while, Panesar, is in real estate.

DWF has made a number of senior appointments and promotions. Directors, Katherine Doran and Emma Peveril, have been appointed to the construction & infrastructure and real estate teams respectively. Peveril joins DWF’s Edinburgh office. She specialises in real estate disposals and acquisitions, leasing, real estate finance and onshore wind projects. These appointments follow that of Ursula Currie, a senior associate in the dispute resolution team, and Eileen Sherry, Kirsteen Picken, Kris Kane and Lucy McMeekin, who join the insurance teams as senior associates. Meanwhile, DWF has made several promotions across the Scottish practice. These include Ashleigh Fareel and Ferga McKay, both promoted to directors in real estate in Glasgow, Calum Raine who is now a senior associate in real estate and Sarah Cunningham, an associate in dispute resolution.
Judge Susan Walker, current vice president of the Employment Tribunal (Scotland) will be appointed to the role of president of Employment Tribunals (Scotland) with effect from 16 July 2022.
Nigel Ross has been appointed as the sheriff principal of the Lothian and Borders Sheriffdom. Sheriff Ross, who sits at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, took up the appointment from 2 May 2022. He is a designated commercial, extradition and personal injury sheriff and since 2017 has sat in the Sheriff Appeal Court.
Sheriff principal Marysia Lewis has been appointed as president of the Sheriff Appeal Court and sheriff principal Craig Turnbull as vice-president. Lewis was appointed sheriff principal of Tayside, Central and Fife in 2015. Turnbull was appointed sheriff principal of Glasgow and Strathkelvin in 2016. He was appointed as a part-time sheriff in 2011 and became a sheriff in 2014.
Six new sheriffs have been appointed to the Sheriff Appeal Court. Brian Mohan, Derek Hamilton, Gillian Wade QC, Iain Fleming, Patrick Hughes and Wendy Sheehan will take up their posts, which will run for five years, with effect from 20 June 2022.
JUSTICE has announced that Almira Delibegovic-Broome QC will take on the role of chair of JUSTICE Scotland, succeeding Shelagh McCall QC. Delibegovic-Broome has acted in a number of public law cases over the years and was standing counsel for HM Revenue & Customs in the period 2012-2015. She is an independent non-executive on the Deloitte UK’s oversight board and on its audit governance board, and a member of the advisory board of the Accountant in Bankruptcy.
Thorntons has announced that partner and head of private client Murray Etherington has been appointed as president of the Law Society of Scotland.
Karen Gough, of 39 Essex Chambers, has been elected as vice-chair of the Society of Construction Law council.
Sir Christopher Bellamy has been appointed as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Ministry of Justice in the House of Lords. Bellamy is a door tenant at Monckton Chambers. While a Minister, Bellamy will not be accepting any work through Monckton Chambers.
The International Practice Group, an international knowledge platform which connects independent professionals in the field of tax advice, law and accountancy, has appointed Nicholas Lakeland, a partner at Laytons, as chairman.
Laila Kennedy, a trainee solicitor at Ledingham Chalmers LLP, has been elected president of the Scottish Young Lawyers Association for 2022-2023. Kennedy has served on the committee for five years. The executive committee now comprises of Patricia Taylor (DWF) as vice president, Amina Amin as treasurer, and Brianella Scott (Sheku Bayoh Public Inquiry) as secretary. Kerri Montgomery (DC Thomson), was re-elected non- executive committee member. Amanjit Uppal (student at Glasgow Caledonian University), Millie Shand (Balfour + Manson), Katrina Hall (DWF), Giorgio Ventisei (Aberdein Considine), Heather Gibson (BTO) and Sophie Campbell (DWF) are all newly elected non-executive committee members.

MacDonald Lynch has appointed Robert Telfer as a partner. Telfer has a Doctorate in European Competition and Consumer Law from the University of Glasgow, where he also completed his Diploma in Professional Legal Practice. He advises on conveyancing, wills, power of attorney and estates.
Gibson Kerr has promoted Nadine Martin to partner. Martin, who joined the firm in 2021, has a practice encompassing all areas of family and child law, including separation, divorce, financial provision, residence and contract disputes and relocation of children. She is also frequently instructed in mediation work throughout Scotland.
