Gary Gallen, founder of legal enterprise rradar, calls on the profession to change its mindset from one of cure to one that prioritises prevention.
For too long, the legal industry has operated like an emergency response team, stepping in when businesses are already in crisis. But what if we could prevent those crises from happening in the first place?
I have been a corporate defence lawyer for more than 25 years. During that time, I have been frustrated seeing how small and medium-sized businesses could have avoided escalating legal disputes if they had better access to proactive legal guidance.
Unlike big corporations, they generally will not have in-house legal teams or deep pockets to navigate constant regulatory changes. One misstep can mean financial disaster.
There has to be a better way. Legal expertise should not be a privilege reserved for the few—it should be accessible, preventative and embedded into businesses' operations. That is why I made it my mission to transform the way we think about law, using technology to create a proactive and holistic risk management offering, rather than just a reactive service.
As lawyers, we should be part of that prevention, not just the cure, helping businesses to navigate complexity, prevent risks and thrive.
Rethinking the model
The legal field has traditionally responded reactively to crises, stepping in when problems escalate into costly disputes for clients. This approach is expensive for small businesses and diverts attention away from their core business activities, impacting long-term growth and stability.
In an increasingly litigious society, businesses want advice on preventing problems, not just representation when issues arise.
I set out to fill that gap. rradar is a legal enterprise with a purpose – focusing on risk prevention through human-led digital legal advice alongside traditional advisory. We equip businesses with the knowledge and tools to avoid legal uncertainties.
We are not just here to tow the car when it breaks down. Think of us like mechanics—under the bonnet, helping to fix small issues before they turn into big problems, fine-tuning businesses to prevent breakdowns before they happen.
Leading this shift meant overcoming industry resistance to change, but the impact was clear. By shifting the focus from crisis management to risk prevention, we help reduce the frequency of legal issues and the severity of their impact on business operations. This approach also fosters a more stable and predictable environment.
Changing the language
“Legalese” is second nature to lawyers but it can be daunting for clients who are unfamiliar with that language, making legal advice feel out of reach.
Clients need to quickly grasp and digest information for a proactive model to really work. That’s why we continually challenge ourselves to make legal concepts not just understandable, but actionable.
Our content team sits next to our lawyers to translate complex legal knowledge into clear, accessible language that anyone can understand, creating engaging content across various formats that makes it easy for businesses to stay informed. When new regulations are introduced or case law changes, our content can be easily updated, ensuring businesses have the latest insights to navigate legal requirements with confidence.
Educating with innovative technologies
Innovating with technology is key to transforming legal services. We have built technology that puts legal expertise directly into business owners' hands.
Tools such as intelligent legal assistants and real-time incident reporting systems are essential to a proactive legal strategy.
Beyond just providing answers, technology empowers business leaders and their teams to develop a deeper understanding of legal risks. Interactive knowledge libraries, digital compliance training and on-demand legal resources make it easier for businesses to anticipate challenges and take preventive action.
This shift from reactive legal support to proactive education fosters a culture of vigilance and accountability, helping businesses stay ahead of legal risks rather than scrambling to manage them after the fact.
By proactively sharing our knowledge within the legal industry, we can do more than solve problems—we can help prevent them entirely.
Building a proactive legal culture
The shift to proactive risk management requires more than new tools and policies; it requires a fundamental mindset change within organisations. This means embedding risk awareness into businesses' everyday operations and making legal considerations an integral part of strategic decision-making processes.
We encourage businesses to embed policies and procedures that focus on staying ahead of compliance requirements and managing risk from the outset. These frameworks help businesses anticipate and mitigate legal challenges. Rather than reacting to problems, they can create a foundation for long-term resilience.
Conducting regular risk assessments helps businesses avoid legal issues. These assessments are vital in identifying vulnerabilities and crafting strategies to address them before they become significant and potentially costly problems.
The future of legal services
We are shifting the entire conversation from crisis management to risk prevention. Businesses are less interested in bringing in a lawyer to fight legal fires—they want a trusted partner who helps them avoid problems in the first place. This proactive, technology-enabled approach is not only there to mitigate risk—it provides businesses with a competitive edge in today’s fast-moving landscape.
Through continued innovation and a commitment to proactive strategies, we can ensure that legal services remain relevant, accessible and effective.
