Interview with Andrew Evans, Partner, Hill Dickinson, Liverpool

Q Andrew, what is your role at Hill Dickinson?

A. I head a team which deals with defendant retail and police work within our Insurance Practice Group. I am the Client Relationship Partner for a number of key clients of the firm, which means my time is split between managing my team, fee-earning and business development activity.

Q What is the best thing about your job?

A. I enjoy it. I am fortunate to work at a firm and in a department that has come so far yet continues to offer so much opportunity. Not many firms of this size and standing allow you to develop your potential and progress from Trainee to Partner so quickly. We have a great team with a real sense of camaraderie, which makes the work place an enjoyable place to be. The new offices are also fairly special!

Q What is the most interesting case you have dealt with?

A. I am dealing with a number of very interesting misfeasance cases at the moment, but if any one case stands out I would have to say JD (FC) -v- East Berkshire Health Authority & 2 Others, a leading duty of care case that I successfully led to the House of Lords. I also helped secure a particularly satisfying outcome for a national lottery winner, who was sued for a 50% share of his winnings.

Q What have been your greatest achievements in your profession to date?

A. From a personal perspective, being one of the youngest Partners in our firm. From a technical perspective, the aforementioned JD case. From a business development perspective, referring a £4-5 billion deal to our corporate team.

Q What would you advise trainee solicitors qualifying today?

A. Be true to themselves and their firm. The landscape of law firms is not what it was 10 years ago when I first started in the profession, but the rewards are there for the talented, committed and hard-working. Don't rest on your laurels. The first 2 years post-qualification should be about becoming an accomplished and established lawyer. That is the time to hone these skills, which are essential to those keen on promotion from 2-3 years PQE onwards.
