Why is a good legal recruiter important in my job search?

Choosing a good legal recruiter is a crucial first step in your job search, so it’s important to choose wisely. I say this as I’ve just spoken to a candidate whose CV was sent to a firm by a recruiter operating outside their remit, and without the consent of the candidate in question. It was drawn to the candidate’s attention when I sent their CV (following the role’s official release) and the firm came back to say they already had the candidate’s details. 

To ensure a good first impression is made

In terms of first impressions, losing control of your job search because you’re working with someone who’ll shop your CV out without your consent, to then lead to conversations around permission, isn’t a good start. As recruiters, we’re here to present you as the well rounded, intelligent candidate that you are. Shockingly, the ‘not knowing where your CV has gone’ instance is far too common. Firms should know your name for the experience on your CV; not because you’ve thrown up some issue on which legal recruitment agency you’re working with.

To ensure you’re fully prepared

Given a lot of us at BCL Legal trained as lawyers before we made the transition to legal recruitment, we understand the strains and stresses of working within the legal profession. That’s why we prepare you for interviews as much as we possibly can; act as a sounding board for any concerns you might have, and genuinely make ourselves available to you as the resource that we are! We’d never send your CV on without your consent, or mention your name to any firm if you weren’t comfortable with us doing so. We’re fully aware that making the right impression is as crucial at the beginning of the process (getting your CV over to the right people, talking to firms about your experience) as it is at the end (when you’ve completed the interview stage and we’re dealing with offers).

Because a job move is a big life decision

Choosing a legal recruiter who possesses both knowledge and integrity when they’re dealing with you is so critical because you’re making a life-changing decision: moving jobs. We’re here to help you manage this important life step and a recruiter should always do it to the best of their ability. Recruiters get a bad name for instances like the above but I assure you this isn’t the case everywhere. At the end of the day, if it doesn’t work for you, it doesn’t work for us.
