The Chambers Band 1-ranked Silk Charlie Sherrard, who specialises in crime and financial crime, shares his passions and interests with The Brief.
How do you like to start the day?
Not often accomplished as so difficult to organise, but I love to start with a really competitive game of padel, quick shower and off to court ready for what the day throws my way.
What’s your favourite object in your office/home office?
Weirdly, my desk at home. It’s not that I recommend bringing work home, but I love the calming view across the room or out into the garden.
Who is your closest colleague?
Not just one, but a group known as “Legal Non-Working Eagles”. They know who they are and are colleagues within the legal profession, all of whom are very special to me.
Do you have a favourite family heirloom?
The closest I got was a football that my dad won in a raffle at Peter Bonnetti’s testimonial dinner. Not just any football. Picture the ball that was signed by the entire England World Cup 1970 Squad. It would be quite something now, especially if his two boys hadn’t played with it in the garden, rubbing off the signatures.
What’s your favourite song of all time?
“Happy Radio” by Edwin Starr. My kids are used to it banging out from the car or playlists. Just makes me smile.
What’s your favourite play?
Jesus Christ Superstar – brilliant play/rock opera that never grows old.
Who’s your favourite movie star?
Denzel Washington. Hard to think of him in a bad movie and love The Equalizer and Inside Man.
What’s your favourite book?
The Very Hungry Caterpillar – loved reading to all 3 kids and now my gorgeous grandson.
What book are you reading right now?
Archbold 2025. Cannot wait for the sequel – Archbold 2026.
What book do you wish you had written?
The Secret Barrister [or have I already?]
What’s the greatest invention of all time?
I’ve never been very scientifically minded. To me, the fax machine blew my mind but you cannot beat the iPhone.
Is there a sport you wish you could play?
I’ve been very fortunate to have had innate hand-eye co-ordination. I can play pretty much any sport, though slower and at a slightly poorer quality as I get older. That said, I would love to be a better swimmer, having peaked as a child with a 25m badge.
Who inspires you in business?
My Dad. He was my role model and mentor without ever trying. He just set such an amazing example in life.
In the office do you dress up, dress down or somewhere in between?
My office is unconventional as it’s a courtroom. As my brother said at my wedding, I chose a life at the Bar because it was a job with hair. Wearing a wig and gown is definitely “dressing up”. When in chambers, “somewhere in between” would be most accurate.
Where do you go to relax?
The gym – not actually doing a workout, of course, but a game of padel or tennis.
What country have you always wanted to visit?
Egypt. Seen the Mexican pyramids but never the Egyptian.
Besides your phone, what do you always have with you?
It would appear that you can always find one of our dog Peanut’s poo-bags in a pocket somewhere.
What’s the best part of your job?
Trying, and hopefully succeeding, in making a real difference to someone’s life.
How do you unwind after work?
Yup… more padel. Great way to let off steam and quality banter.
Finally, what’s your guilty pleasure?
Taking my girls to cheesy concerts to watch their favourite boy bands – or ageing man bands when it comes to Westlife, Busted and McFly. Love the experience of sharing those moments.
