How do you like to start the day?
I’m an early riser. Cup of coffee, chat with the dog (a ten-year-old Westie that I said we would never have and who now lives under the desk in my study), emails and then I always take my son to school on the way to the office.
What’s your favourite object in your office/home office?
My sons bought me a limited-edition Mont Blanc pen some years ago. I only use it at home for fear of losing it!
Who is your closest colleague?
That’s a hot potato question! My Practice Director – she is amazing.
Do you have a favourite family heirloom?
My father’s WWII medals – they are still in the original tatty box that they were sent in by the Ministry of War.
What’s your favourite song of all time?
Human League – “Don’t you want me”. First single I ever bought, damn thing still jumps and needs a penny on the stylus.
What’s your favourite play?
Never been to one unless the many I have endured of my children’s schools count?
Who’s your favourite movie star?
Denzel Washington; so many great movies but American Gangster is epic.
What’s your favourite book?
Don’t have one – never read a book twice.
What book are you reading right now?
I am a massive audiobook fan, always have one on the go. Just coming to the end of the current book by Simon Michael in the Charles Holborne series about a criminal barrister with a murky East End gangster past – they are gripping.
What book do you wish you had written?
I am not much of a creative – but I’ll take the Harry Potter royalties all day long!
What’s the greatest invention of all time?
Got to be the Internet hasn’t it?
Is there a sport you wish you could play?
I would love to open the batting for England at Lords.
Who inspires you in business?
I have been fortunate to be in business with the same partners for decades. Collectively I think we have inspired each other.
In the office do you dress up, dress down or somewhere in between?
Definitely somewhere in between.
Where do you go to relax?
I only ever relax when I am out of the UK.
What country have you always wanted to visit?
China.
Besides your phone, what do you always have with you?
What else does anyone need? I always have a lip balm in my pocket!
What’s the best part of your job?
No two days are the same in my firm. I love to observe our trainees and younger lawyers flourish into hardened litigators and advocates.
How do you unwind after work?
When is that exactly?
Finally, what’s your guilty pleasure?
Selling Sunset and that type of scandalous rubbish on Netflix!
