In 2025 Rebekah Parker was appointed as the first female managing partner in the City of London commercial law firm Laytons ETL’s 150-year history. She shares her passions and interests with The Brief.

How do you like to start the day?

I’d like to start the day with a lie in, 6 Music on the radio and a cup of tea. The reality is I am usually woken by a four-year-old shouting “is it morning yet?” when it often most definitely isn’t.

What’s your favourite object in your office/home office?

My dog, Mabel, who sleeps by my feet all day when I work from home. We have an office dog day at Laytons but she’s a bit too old and grumpy for that.

Who is your closest colleague?

The Head of our Disputes team, Geraint Thomas. We’ve worked together since I was newly qualified and he is my go-to for advice.

Do you have a favourite family heirloom?

Not an heirloom as such, but I have one of my late dad’s jumpers. I feel close to him when I wear it.

What’s your favourite song of all time?

I find it very hard to pick a favourite. On the shortlist would be “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence + The Machine, “The Whole of the Moon” by the Waterboys and “Everywhere” by Fleetwood Mac.

What’s your favourite play?

My most recent favourite was Death of England by Clint Dyer and Roy Williams. I’ve only seen one part of the trilogy but would love to see the others.

Who’s your favourite movie star?

Olivia Colman.

What’s your favourite book?

Soldier Sailor by Claire Kilroy, which explores motherhood in a beautiful and devastating way.  No book has stayed with me like this one has.

What book are you reading right now?

I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy – for the Laytons’ book club!

What book do you wish you had written?

The Squirrels Who Squabbled by Rachel Bright and Jim Field – my favourite book to read to my two boys.

What’s the greatest invention of all time?

The internet.

Is there a sport you wish you could play?

I played hockey until I left university.  I have started coaching my son’s team but would love the time to properly play again.

Who inspires you in business?

Brené Brown – she has built a hugely successful business and her lessons on vulnerability and courage have made me a better leader.

In the office do you dress up, dress down or somewhere in between?

Somewhere in between. At Laytons we dress for our day, which I think is the right balance.

Where do you go to relax?

The beach. Whatever the weather, looking out at the sea always makes me feel calm.

What country have you always wanted to visit?

New Zealand. It looks magical.

Besides your phone, what do you always have with you?

My AirPods – I like being able to listen to music and podcasts on the move.

What’s the best part of your job?

Problem solving. Whether as a litigator or manager, I enjoy getting to the bottom of issues and helping people achieve their desired outcomes.

How do you unwind after work?

Now that the lighter evenings are here, we take the boys and the dog to the park for one last run around before bed. Being outside together is the best way to end the day.

Finally, what’s your guilty pleasure?

Grey’s Anatomy – I have recently started it again from the beginning and it is perfect escapism.
