Shoosmiths has appointed Catherine Williams to head up its Milton Keynes office. Williams, a real estate partner and head of the firm’s living sector, has taken up the post from commercial partner Robin Webb who spent four years in the role. Webb is moving on to become national head of the firm’s commercial group following David Jackson’s appointment as Shoosmiths’ CEO, with effect from 1 May 2022. She will be supported by Shoosmiths’ partner Claire Checketts who takes on the role of deputy head of office.

Wilkin Chapman has welcomed partner Julie Bailey to its family law team in Lincoln. Bailey has 36 years’ experience in family law, including as the managing partner of a firm.

Devonshires is set to open an office in Birmingham. Joining the new office, located on Temple Street, is housing corporate and governance partner Gemma Bell.

A team from Penningtons Manches Cooper have joined Devonshires. The Manchester Law Society has elected Paul Johnson as its 2022 president following two years as the Society’s vice president. Johnson, a partner in the corporate team at Ward Hadaway, is based in the firm’s Manchester office, where he has been a senior member of the team since he joined in 2014.

The Independent Press Standards Organisation has appointed Sarah Hamilton as its complaints reviewer. Hamilton was admitted as a solicitor in 1995 and had a 20-year career with a City law firm, specialising in litigation, acting for public sector bodies and insurance companies. Leaving private practice in 2016, Hamilton is now one of England’s three Boundary Commissioners, chairs fitness to practise committees for three healthcare regulators and is lay inspector of university programmes for dental schools and Social Work England. She is an independent panel member for the London Assembly and adjudicator for the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

Rocio de la Crus has been appointed to the Council of Europe Data Protection Unit, a committee dedicated to understanding data protection rules and protecting individuals’ data. de la Crus joined BPE Solicitors in September 2021, as a partner, and has extensive knowledge of both the European data protection rules and the UK general data protection rules, and information law.

Midlands-based think tank, Centre for the New Midlands, has appointed Amardeep Gill to the newly formed strategic advisory board. Gill, a partner at Trowers & Hamlins, is a local government and public sector specialist. He advises government, public bodies and SMEs on transformation or business critical projects. His sector expertise includes digital technology, leisure, transport, health, education, outsourcing, regeneration and aviation.

Carey Olsen partner James Noble and senior associate Amelia Tan have become the first offshore law practitioners to be approved as members of the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Singapore (IPAS). Noble, who leads Carey Olsen’s litigation, insolvency and restructuring practice in Asia, advises on Cayman, British Virgin Islands (BVI) and Bermuda law, and is the only Cayman and BVI admitted litigator in Singapore. Tan, a member of the litigation, insolvency and restructuring practice in Singapore, has a broad range of experience in commercial litigation, with a focus on complex, multi-jurisdictional shareholder related litigation, corporate disputes and insolvency and restructuring matters.

Six group litigation law firms, Edwin Coe, Hausfeld & Co, Keller Lenkner UK, Leigh Day, Milberg London, and PGMBM have founded a collective redress association for claimant practitioners called the Collective Redress Lawyers Association (CORLA). The association’s co-presidents are Martyn Day of Leigh Day, and David Greene of Edwin Coe. Vice president is Guy Robson of Keller Lenkner UK, the secretary is Christopher Neill of PGMBM. Lucy Rigby, a partner at Hausfeld has responsibility for public affairs and policy while treasurer Natasha Pearman works at Milberg London. Nathaniel Barber of Keller Lenkner UK is the membership secretary. Committee members include Liberty Bridge, Nicola Boyle, Zahira Hussain, and Nicola Vinovrski.

Ashtons Legal has announced the appointment of its new CEO, James Tarling from 1 April 2022. Tarling joined Ashtons in 2015 as a corporate and commercial partner and most recently has taken responsibility for the development of the firm’s future strategy. Tarling takes on the CEO position from Ed O’Rourke who is remaining with the firm, initially in a new role to further develop the business client group within Ashtons.

Penningtons Manches Cooper has promoted Dr Lisa Page to partner in the Birmingham office. She is a highly experienced intellectual property lawyer with a specialism in the life sciences sector.

Anthony Collins Solicitors (ACS) has appointed a new partner to its local government team. Claire Ward, joins the firm with extensive expertise. In her new role at ACS, Ward will be supporting local authorities nationwide and offering advice for council monitoring officers, chief executives and other senior officers on governance issues.

Sabina Haag has joined Nicholsons Solicitors as a partner in the litigation team. Specialising in civil litigation, Haag works particularly on property disputes, lease renewals and termination, forfeiture, landlord/tenant issues, boundary disputes, and restrictive covenants.

Woodfines has made four partner promotions: Hannah Johnson, Claire Spencer, Nathan Taylor-Allkins and James Wilkinson. After joining Woodfines in 2012 to begin her training contract, Johnson qualified as a solicitor in 2014. She specialises in probate, will and inheritance disputes. She also deals with personal injury claims. Spencer specialises in commercial and property litigation having over 17 years’ legal experience in both the UK and New Zealand. Taylor-Allkins joined Woodfines as a trainee solicitor in 2013 and qualified into the crime and regulatory department in 2015. He has a broad criminal defence practice and represents individuals and businesses in the police station, Magistrates’ Court and Crown Court on matters ranging from motoring cases to grave crimes, including complex frauds and homicide. Taylor-Allkins also advises on specialist regulatory matters including transport and cases brought by the HSE, Environment Agency, FCA, Office of Road and Rail, Insolvency Service and Local Councils (planning and licensing). Wilkinson, an experienced corporate and commercial solicitor, joined Woodfines in 2021. He specialises in mergers and acquisitions, fundraising, shareholders’ arrangements and preparing businesses for major capital events. He has a significant interest in the environment and sustainability sector. Meanwhile, Suzanna Stephenson, head of the firm’s property department, and Mikhala Leak, who will also progress to the head of the private clients department, are becoming members of the LLP.

Browne Jacobson is relocating its Birmingham office to 103 Colmore Row. The firm is expected to relocate its legal and support team from Victoria Square House by the end of Q3 2022.

Devonshires has opened a Birmingham office based at Somerset House, 37 Temple Street, Birmingham B2 5DP. Joining the office is partner Gemma Bell. Bell specialises in advising housing associations on corporate projects including M&A, group consolidations, joint ventures, de-merger and stock transfers. Also joining the new Birmingham office is senior solicitor Rose Klemperer, and solicitors Ellen Damlica and Sharon Thandi.

Capsticks has announced a number of promotions, including 11 salaried partners. In the Birmingham office, Lucy Erskine (claims) and Ian Brook (regulatory) have been promoted.

Pepperells Solicitors in Lincoln has welcomed six new family law specialists. John Conlon, who has 20 years’ experience in family law, has particular expertise in child law. Alison McGowan specialises in complex court proceedings, including care, private law children matters, special guardianship and adoption. Hannah Bell specialises in representing parents in arranging contact orders, residency and guardianship. Also joining the team are Ivy Waddingham, experienced family law legal assistant, Michelle Kent and Olivia Mychajiluk who will support the team with paralegal, administration and first line support.

Waldrons Solicitors has merged with Blount Hemmings Solicitors. The directors of Blount Hemmings, Julian Blount, Robin Hemmings and Jill Banks, have joined Waldrons and will continue to trade from Waldron’s present office in Kingswinford. Dehns has announced a number of promotions effective from 1 April 2022. In the Oxford office, Mark Bell (engineering group) and Jennifer Gordon (chemical group) have become partners at the firm.

The Insolvency Service has welcomed Frances Coulson as a new non-executive board member. Coulson is a practising lawyer, with more than 26 years’ experience in insolvency law, and a senior partner, board member and head of insolvency & restructuring at Wedlake Bell.

Andrew Grantham QC, of Kings Chambers, has been elected as UK chair of the British Irish Commercial Bar Association. Grantham practises almost exclusively in commercial and chancery dispute resolution including arbitration and international disputes.

Mills & Reeve has promoted a number of principal associates to partner with effect from 1 June 2022, including two in Birmingham. Helen Tringham has significant expertise advising on contentious data protection and cyber matters. Katherine Kennedy, who leads the family team in Birmingham, deals predominantly with finances post-divorce or relationship breakdown, particularly when businesses and trusts are involved, as well as advising on related children issues. There have also been two promotions in Cambridge. Amanda Narkiewicz specialises in regulatory and healthcare law. Alexandra Pike advises clients on construction and engineering projects. She has years of experience of adjudication, arbitration, and court proceedings. Meanwhile, in Norwich there have also been two promotions to partner. Elizabeth Field advises a range of private clients on estate planning and asset protection through inheritance tax and capital gains tax advice, flexible wills, trust restructuring and powers of attorney. Matthew Short is a corporate tax lawyer, focusing on real estate, corporate and charity taxation. He regularly advises a wide variety of clients on property acquisitions, developments, joint ventures and portfolio management, as well as charity tax issues, corporate transactions and funds work.

Lodders has appointed Chris Dewes as a partner in its real estate practice where he will focus on commercial property development and investment services. He has considerable experience in the commercial property development and investment area having acted for developer clients for more than 20 years.

DAC Beachcroft has announced 17 promotions to partner with effect from 1 May 2022. They include Kieran Mitchell (claims solutions) in the Birmingham office.

Harrison Clark Rickerbys has appointed Sally Robinson as a partner in the family team based in Northampton. Robinson specialises in nuptial and cohabitation agreements, and providing advice to those who have separated or are getting divorced.

Sandstone Law LLP has been officially launched in Oxford. Weightmans has appointed Mike Brown as head of its counter-fraud team.  He will be based in the Birmingham office and will have national responsibility for the management and development of the firm’s fraud practice including cross class injury work and working with the commercial fraud capabilities across the business; developing products that assist in the identification, defence and prosecution of fraudsters.

DLA Piper has announced that Legal director, Gemma Lawrence, will be joining the board of the firm’s global scholarships programme, taking on a role in the finance committee.

Charles Russell Speechlys has appointed Alastair Morrison as a property consultant in the firm’s Cheltenham office, as part of the landed estates and heritage property group. Much of his work focuses on the purchase, sale, leasing and mortgaging of rural property. He also advises on complex farming structures and the post-Brexit agricultural policy. mfg Solicitors has appointed solicitor Emily Regimbeau to its agriculture and rural affairs department. Regimbeau specialises in rural property sales, easements and agricultural tenancies. She qualified as a solicitor in 2009.

Birketts has appointed Derryn Rolfe as a legal director in the construction and engineering team. Previously a materials engineer, Rolfe later qualified as a solicitor in 2005. At Birketts she will deal with both contentious and non-contentious advice across the engineering and construction sector.

Dr Melis Özdel, an academic and commercial maritime lawyer, has joined Birketts as a consultant.
